Vandal electrocuted in Unizik

A man has been electrocuted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Unizik), Awka, Anambra State.

The incident happened on Monday night around the Faculty of Education, close to the Department of Economics.

The victim was suspected to be cutting a high tension cable when electricity was restored by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) which killed him instantly.

A source, who would not want to be named, said, “We came on Tuesday morning and found the corpse suspended on an electric pole at a transformer point in the area of the new Faculty of Education building.

“Evidence showed he was almost done cutting a high tension cable when electricity was restored by the EEDC and he got electrocuted.

“EEDC officials, policemen and officials of the safety department of the university were on ground as the body was being retrieved around 11am today (Tuesday).”

The incident came barely a week after a man was discovered killed in a similar circumstance at a transformer in Amawbia, a neighbouring community.

When contacted, the spokesman of the institution, Mrs Chika Ene, said, “Please call the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the university. I don’t know anything about that.”

The state’s police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the university had briefed the command about the incident.

The Head, Corporate Communication of EEDC, Mr Emeka Eze, confirmed the incident when contacted on phone.

He said, “This is a case of vandalism that happened in the early hours of Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

He said the body was taken away by men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from B Division.
