Remembering Sheikh Abubakar Giro: A beacon of Islamic wisdom

In the heart of Kebbi State, a remarkable Islamic cleric and scholar, Sheikh Abubakar Giro, has left an indelible mark on the spiritual landscape. Born in the serene Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, Sheikh Abubakar Giro’s journey into the world of Islamic scholarship is a testament to his unwavering dedication to the faith.

Sheikh Giro embarked on his path to enlightenment at a tender age, starting with the traditional form of education known as Tsangaya in the Hausa language; a practice deeply rooted in the northern regions of Nigeria. In the humble Almajiri schools, he diligently learned to recite and study the Holy Quran. His thirst for knowledge knew no bounds, prompting him to venture beyond his homeland in pursuit of a deeper understanding of Islam.

Throughout his life, Sheikh Abubakar Giro’s unwavering commitment to his faith led him to explore foreign lands in search of knowledge and wisdom. Today, he stands as one of Nigeria’s most esteemed Islamic scholars, a testament to his relentless pursuit of enlightenment.

Notably, Sheikh Abubakar Giro Argungu served as the National Organizing Secretary of the Jama’atul Izalatil Bid’ah Wa’ikamatis Sunnah, a prominent religious organization in Nigeria. Under the leadership of another revered Islamic scholar, Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, this organization has left an indelible mark on the northern part of Nigeria by promoting the teachings of Islam.

For many, including myself, Sheikh Giro was more than a scholar; he was an inspiration. Growing up, I would listen to his powerful sermons, which resonated with his distinct Kebbi accent. His words carried the essence of the Holy Quran, leaving an indelible imprint on my heart. He symbolized a beacon of faith within the Islamic centre of Nigeria, consistently reminding his listeners to pray for him whenever news of his passing reached their ears.

Today, as we mourn the loss of Sheikh Abubakar Giro, who departed this world on September 6, 2023, we pray for Allah’s mercy to envelop his noble soul. May his teachings and the message he preached continue to spread across the farthest corners of the world, enlightening and inspiring generations to come.
