A former member of the Federal House of Representatives, Robinson Uwak has called for adherence to democratic norms and good governance as the recipe against coups in Africa.
Robinson Uwak, in a statement where he condemned the latest coup in Gabon, which removed Ali Bongo as president, said being a former lawmaker, he appreciates the benefits of democracy as against military dictatorship.
Robinson Uwak also noted that the resurgence of coups in Africa is tied to the many years of institutional failures, flawed elections, political impositions and social injustice occasioned by bad leadership.
“The actions of the coupists in Sudan, Tunisia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger and now Gabon has set the Africa Union several steps back in its efforts to entrench democratic principles on the continent,” Uwak said.
“I support the actions taken by the African Union and the international bodies in against the junta in Gabon, which includes the suspension of the country.”
He, therefore, called on Africa to develop its democracy that would provide the needed development and take majority of the people out of poverty.
