Cooperatives generates 18,563 employment in Nigeria

The Federal Director of Cooperatives, Engr. Akintoye Akintola has said cooperative societies have generated 18,563 employment in Nigeria and over 100 million globally.

Akintola stated this at the United Nations International Day of Cooperatives held on the 1st of July in Abuja. He said, “Cooperatives employ over 100m people, making it evident that they are key players in the global economy.

“In Nigeria, the 24,175 registered cooperative societies encoded into the Cooperative Data Analysis System (CODAS) have provided jobs for 13,478 males and 5,085 females totalling 18, 563 employment generated,” he said.

Engr. Akintola who also represented the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh said he Department of Cooperatives has laid foundation to establish a N500 billion National Cooperative Development Fund (NCDF).

He said, “This fund is expected to create greater access to finance for cooperative societies and provide a guarantee for cooperative sector investment.”
