Gombe Assembly yet to screen cabinet nominees 5 weeks after deadline

The Gombe State House of Assembly is yet to screen 17 commissioner nominees submitted to it by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, 38 days ago.

Daily Trust reports that Governor Yahaya had submitted the list on July 28, exactly 60 days after he was sworn in for a second term in line with constitutional provisions.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, submitted the list of the nominees to the Clerk of the State House of Assembly, Barrister Rukaiyatu A. Jalo, and they were later unveiled at a plenary by the Speaker of the House, Abubakar Mohammed Luggerewo.

Others are; Dr Barnabas Malle (Kaltungo), Dr Usman Maijama’a Kallamu (Kwami), Rtd. Lt. Col. Abdullahi Bello (Balanga), and Dr Abdullahi Bappah Garkuwa (Gombe).

Our correspondent reports that immediately after unveiling the nominees, the speaker announced that the house was going on a three-week recess and would resume on August 21.

But about two weeks after the announced date of their resumption from the said recess, the lawmakers are yet to convene and screen the commissioner-nominees sent to them by the governor.

A staff of the assembly who spoke on condition of anonymity told Daily Trust that the failure to screen the commissioners was not unconnected with a brewing crisis between the legislative and the executive arm over “unpaid allowances.”

He said the lawmakers had met last week, with a view to resolving the crisis for the nominees to be screened.

However, the Director of Information and Reportorial of the Assembly, Abubakar Mohammed Umar, said the lawmakers will resume on Tuesday.

He confirmed that after their resumption, they would screen the commissioner-nominees sent by the governor.
