Enyimba seek redemption as Remo Stars chase first continental win

Enyimba and Remo Stars are gearing up for the second leg games in the CAF Champions League as they both aim for favourable outcomes to progress to the next phase despite their narrow defeats in the away games.

Enyimba showcased their championship pedigree by scoring three goals on the road against Al Ahly Benghazi. It was an impressive offensive display, with Mbaoma Chijioke finding the back of the net in the third minute.

However, their defence faltered, conceding four goals and suffering their 11th away defeat to a North African side. This was the first time in 20 years that Enyimba conceded four goals in a CAF Champions League match, with their previous defensive struggle occurring in a 6-1 loss to Ismaily in 2003.

To secure their passage to the next stage, Enyimba, led by coach Finidi George, must rectify their defensive gaffe and aim to score at least one goal without conceding in the must-win encounter in Aba.

Fortunately, Enyimba boasts an impressive record in their last five continental home games, remaining undefeated with four wins and a draw.

Meanwhile, club chairman and legendary Super Eagles skipper Nwankwo Kanu, has charged his players to go all out for victory against Ahly Benghazi.

Looking forward to the reverse fixture, Kanu wrote on X (formerly Twitter) :“Looking forward to Sundays game when we host Ahly Benghazi. #CAFCL tie. Kick off 3pm. 27th August Aba. Let’s do this @fcenyimba.”

In the same vein, Remo Stars had a tough loss in Ghana against Medeama SC, with Sikiru Alimi missing a crucial chance to equalize.

It was their first defeat in 14 competitive games, and Medeama now holds the advantage with a lone goal victory. Remo Stars are in a difficult position as they aim for their first continental win.

Their last home game on the continent ended in disappointment, losing by a lone goal to AS FAR in Ikenne. To turn the tide, Remo Stars must avoid complacency in front of their fans.

Luckily, they’ve been unbeatable at home this year, not losing any games in Ikenne. Daniel Ogunmodede and his team are determined to maintain this impressive record as they take on Medeama today. They know that only a victory will keep their Champions League dreams alive.
