FCT urged to enforce weekly environmental sanitation

An estate developer, Ahmed Abubakar Goringo, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Bello, to enforce an efficient and serious weekly environmental sanitation in order to rid Abuja of garbage.

Goringo who stated this in a paper tagged ‘Getting Rid of Garbage in Abuja’, said members of the Nigeria Police Force, military and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) should enforce the sanitation activities.

He said: “Abuja should compare with other beautiful countries in the world. Unfortunately, today, everywhere you go in the city, what you hear is “Abuja stinks.” One will wonder whether the authorities concerned have no institution to deal with the dirt.

“It is so embarrassing today that even the high-brow areas of Abuja like Asokoro, Garki II, Maitama, Wuse II and Maitama extension stink with garbage all over.”

The worst hit, according to him, are the Satellite cities of the FCT like Gwagwalada, Nyanya, Karu, Jikwoyi, Kurudu, Lugbe, and Kuje. “The environments are so dirty; the laws against dumping of refuse are violated at will and at all times; health facilities bastardised; even school environments are not left out in the dirty business with polythene bags littering everywhere,” he said.
