Wife of Sokoto State Governor, Hajia Mairo Tambuwal has expressed concern over desertification and drought problems in the state, noting that it requires the commitment of all stakeholders including women towards tackling the situation.
Hajiya Mairo who is founder of Maryam Mustapha Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, MMWAT Legacy Initiative, stated this in an interview shortly after the Special Ramadan Breakfast with various women groups in the state.
She disclosed plans by the initiative to strategize on how women would be engaged to turn the environment green.
The environmental agenda, she said, would be flagged -off before September, 2017.
She pointed out that environmental issues were not for men alone to tackle.
Mrs Tambuwal however said her initiative focuses more on women and children owing to their vulnerability to many diseases.
She added: "MMWAT Legacy Initiative has been a humanitarian platform that has its eyes on various segments of the society; education, Health, social vices, Juveniles delinquencies, agriculture and environment."
According to her, one of the initiative’s agendas in the next three months was the Noma disease. "It is very paramount to me to make sure we get doctors to come in and conduct cosmetics surgeries for adults and children who are at the Noma Hospital Sokoto.”
She said the initiative facilitated the diagnosis treatment and after care of over 100 patients in 2016.
