21 arrested over illegal activities at Lagos airport

The Joint Monitoring Task Force (JMTF) and the Aviation Security Crime Investigation and Intelligence (AVSEC-CII) have arrested 21 suspects at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

City & Crime reports that security at the nation’s busiest airport came under serious breaches recently, with some safety critical facilities stolen from the runway.

Following the arrests, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at the weekend said that it was determined to rid the airport environment of touts and perpetrators of illegitimate activities.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of FAAN, Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua, who confirmed the arrests, said, “On Friday, the MMIA JMTF and AVSEC-CII raided the ITZ 1 & 2 landside, the car parks and the airport access roads.

“In the course of the raid, a total of 21 persons, including touts, illegal foreign exchange dealers, hawkers and scavengers, were arrested.

“The apprehended suspects have since been transferred to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) through the CII for further necessary action.

‘’FAAN warns that anyone who has no legitimate business at the airports should please desist from approaching the airports.’’
