Reps applaud D’Tigress on FIBA Women’s Afrobasket triumph

 

The House of Representatives has congratulated Nigeria’s female basketball team members D’Tigress for their outstanding performance and emergence as winners of the just concluded 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.

In a statement jointly signed by the House Spokesperson/ Chairman Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi Jr and the Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Ekene Adams Abubakar on Sunday, the House stated that, members of the team have done the country proud, so they deserve all the praise.

It stated, “The incredible display of talent and the signature Nigerian ‘Can Do’ spirit was a delight to watch for all Nigerians and fans of the game across the world. They have brought honour and pride to Nigerians, and we owe them our deepest gratitude.

“We congratulate the entire team for this feat, including Amy Okonkwo, who finished as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. We also celebrate the head coach, Rena Wakama, who made history as the first female to lead a team to win the Afrobasket tournament, as well as the entire management and technical team.

Meanwhile, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu yesterday hosted the team to a reception at the State House, Abuja.

Mrs Tinubu, while speaking, said their performance on the basketball court was a testament to hard work, discipline and commitment to excellence.

“Your victory transcends sports, symbolising the potential that can be realised when a diverse group of individuals come together with a common goal”.

“I am immensely proud of your achievements and the positive image you have projected for our country. Your success reinforces the fact that Nigerian women are capable of reaching the highest level in any endeavour they choose to undertake”.

Nigeria had defeated Senegal 84-74 to win the title for the fourth time in a row. Nigeria had won the competition three times in 2017, 2019, and 2021.
