Resignation: Security operatives keep vigil at Adamu’s house

A day after submitting his resignation letter, security operatives were still stationed at the residence of the former National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, Daily Trust reports.

This comes as sources at the party’s national secretariat told Daily Trust after an emergency National Working Committee (NWC) meeting Monday that a schedule of activities for a mini convention where a new national chairman will emerge through delegates’ election would soon be released.

During the NWC meeting presided over by the acting national chairman, Senator Abubakar Kyari, the earlier scheduled National Caucus (NC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings slated for today and tomorrow were suspended indefinitely.

Our correspondent reports that the plain clothes operatives were guarding Adamu’s house on Ali Akilu Crescent, by Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, around 3pm on Monday.

Occupants of the house especially those around a car parked inside the building were carrying out their activities without giving any signs of the incident that had happened.

However, the area was quiet as there was no signal that Senator Adamu was around going by the absence of guests that usually visited him at home.

Although operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission were also said to have gone to Adamu’s residence following his resignation Sunday, the anti-graft agency declined to speak when contacted yesterday.

Attempts to get an official response from the EFCC yesterday proved abortive as several calls to the mobile phone of the spokesman of the commission, Wilson Uwujaren, rang unanswered.

He was yet to reply to a text message sent to him as at when filing this report last night.

But a credible source told Daily Trust last night that there is already a petition against the immediate past chairman of the ruling party which the operatives will act on soonest.

Why NWC postponed NEC, caucus meetings

Addressing newsmen at the end of the emergency meeting of the NWC yesterday, the deputy national chairman (North) who is now the acting national chairman, Abubakar Kyari, said the caucus and NEC meetings were postponed indefinitely following the new developments in the party.

Kyari said, “The NWC wishes to inform you of the resignation of the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and that of the National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

“And with this development and according to the constitution of the APC, it is now incumbent on my humble self, Senator Abubakar Kyari, as deputy national chairman, North, to assume the office of the acting National Chairman of the APC.

“And subsequently also, the deputy national secretary, Festus Fuantar, will now assume the office of the acting National Secretary of the APC.

“With these developments in the change of leadership, I will like to inform everybody here that the proposed national caucus meeting slated for Tuesday, the 18th of July 2023 and the NEC meetings of the APC slated for Wednesday night in July 2023 are hereby postponed.

“This postponement will not be indefinite but a new date will be communicated in the near future.

“At this point, the individuals have resigned voluntarily and that is what is available at this moment. Reasons for resignations will be made to you in the near future.”

Credible sources at the party’s national secretariat told Daily Trust that the postponement is to give room for the NWC under the acting chairman to deliberate on the new date and reach key decisions for NEC’s approval.

It was learnt that the next NEC meeting would approve a date for a mini convention where a new national chairman and secretary would be elected.

A source who never wanted to be named said: “The NWC will get a schedule of activities for a mini-convention where a new national chairman will emerge through delegates’ election.

“The NWC is equally expected to reach key resolutions regarding the sale of forms for the two slots.”
