Sporting edge Remo Stars on penalties to lift Naija Super 8 trophy

Newly promoted Sporting FC Lagos yesterday edged out Remo Stars 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time to win the inaugural edition of the Naija Super 8 tournament at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena Lagos.

The homeboys dominated proceedings in the early stages and would have gone ahead as early as the 11th minute when Saturday Okon released a scorcher from 20 yards but Remo Stars goalkeeper Bankole Kayode tipped the ball over for the first corner kick of the match.

Remo Stars replied in the 19th minute when lanky striker Isaac James lifted highest to head at goal but was denied by the crossbar.

Sporting’s diminutive midfielder Odafi Onyemachi also came close to breaking the deadlock in the 24th minute but his shot missed the target narrowly.

And a minute before the break, Saturday Okon got to the end of a Rivio Anyehwere cross but failed to find the back of the net.

On resumption, both sides continued to search for the opener which finally came in the 54th minute when defender Aliu Salaudeen reacted quickest in a goalmouth melee to put Sporting ahead.

The host club appeared to be cruising to victory until the introduction of Adams Olamilekan who caused them all sorts of troubles.

The youngster thought he had equalised for Remo in the 86th minute but his goal was ruled offside.

However, the former Lobi Stars man struck again in the second half added time to take the match to extra-time where Sporting kept their nerves to win their first major trophy two years after they came into existence.
