Ogenyi faces sack as Kano Pillars eye Maikaba

The hammer of Kano Pillars is dangling over their Technical Adviser, Evans Ogenyi, despite leading the club back to the Nigerian topflight in the just concluded season.

A few minutes after Kano Pillars lost the finals of the NNL Super 8 to Heartland in Asaba, the management of the club set up a committee to investigate why the club lost two matches in a row.

Pillars had lost 0-2 to arch rivals Katsina United in their final group match of the NNL Super 8 but picked one of the promotion tickets and reached the finals on superior goal difference.

On Monday, the Interim Chairman of the club, Alhaji Babangida Umar ‘Little’, inaugurated the five-man committee which is headed by Alhaji Rabiu Mohammed ‘Pele’, and gave it one week to submit its findings.

Meanwhile, Daily Trust has gathered reliably that Pillars have already made contact with the immediate past Technical Adviser of Enugu Rangers, Abdul Maikaba, to replace Coach Evans Ogenyi.

A football stakeholder in Kano who is conversant with happenings in the club told our correspondent that the management of Pillars are not satisfied with the technical abilities of the former Lobi Stars and Nasarawa United coach.

“I can tell you authoritatively that our former coach, Abdul Maikaba, is favoured to return. He has just left Rangers and discussions with him have reached an advanced stage.

“Ogenyi is not a bad coach but he has not demonstrated sufficient capacity to lead a big club like Kano Pillars. The committee to investigate the recent performances of the club may even indict him.

“So, I don’t see him staying to lead the club in the 2023/2024 NPFL season,” he said.
