Farmers make case for security in Plateau communities

Farmers in Ta-hoss and Jol communities of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State are calling on federal and state governments to take action against the destruction of their crops.

Daily Trust on Sunday had on Monday reported how some of the farmers accused Fulani herders of destroying their crops, an accusation that was denied by the leadership of Gan Allah Fulani Development Association in the state.

The farmers, who accused the herders of cutting down their unripe maize, Irish potatoes and cabbage, among other crops, said they woke up on Sunday morning and saw their crops destroyed in the farms.

According to the farmers, the destruction which they said was uncalled for, was a deliberate move to deny them their means of livelihood, and called on security agencies to take urgent action on the matter.

Solomon Dalyop, President Berom Youth Moulders, said “food insecurity is very imminent. These incidents are premeditated. We had given the intelligence to the appropriate authorities for proactive measures to avert this, but we are seeing it coming to bare. We are calling on federal and state governments to rise up to the occasion and bring an end to this insecurity that has been on in the state.”

Sarah David, one of the farmers whose crops were destroyed, said “we have suffered in this farm. It took us a long time before we got to this stage but only for us to wake up and see how our crops were destroyed. They destroyed maize, cabbage and other crops. We were told that they are still coming. We are calling on the government to do the needful to bring an end to this problem.”
