Some youths who protested on Tuesday have accused the judicial probe panel to instituted by Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State to investigate former Governor Kayode Fayemi of trying to nail him by all means and persecute him for political reasons.
This protest came barely 24 hours after some students drawn from tertiary institutions in Ekiti state staged a protest calling on the former Governor not to use court injunction to stop the judicial probe panel constituted to investigate him while in office.
The youths armed with placards under the aegis of Ekiti Youth Vanguard, marched through Ado Ekiti major streets today, calling on Governor Ayo Fayose to respect the rule of law as Fayemi had filed two separate cases in court over the plan to probe him.
Some of their placards read: "Fayose Go, Ekiti People Are Tired of You", "Fayose Resign, Ekiti Economy Has Collapsed", "Obey the Rule of Law", "Ekiti Pensioners Are Dying", "Confusion in Ekiti Government House, Who is in Charge, Fayose or Aregbesola", "We Support Buhari’s Policies, Fayose Must Stop Vicious Attacks Against Buhari", "Is Rauf Aregbesola Acting Governor of Ekiti", among others.
Governor Fayose had set up the panel to probe Fayemi’s financial dealings while in office between October 2010 and October 2014.
The protesters expressed fear that the panel had been handed an assignment to indict the minister and therefore cannot be trusted to do justice, alledging that all the members of the panel were Fayose’s cronies.
The Coordinator, Charles Fakunle, told journalists that the planned probe was a ploy to divert the attention of Ekiti people from Fayose’s alleged failure to provide good governance.
He said: "Fayemi borrowed N25 billion bond money and paid back N14 bilion before leaving office. Fayose accused Fayemi of debt of N86 billion, which DMO in the Federal Ministry of Finance had authenticated as N18 billion."
