Benue IDP camps record 11 rape cases in 5 months

At least 11 cases of sexual abuse have been reported within five months in the Gbajimba and Anyiin Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Guma and Logo LGAs respectively in Benue State.

Our correspondent reports that three reported case of child marriage were also recorded in two out of the many IDP camps in the state.

The cases were brought to the fore by the Sexual Offences Awareness and Response (SOAR) initiative during a quarterly meeting of the Benue State Child’s Rights Implementation Committee (SCRIC) chaired by the state Ministry of Women Affairs.

SOAR’s Njoku Chibuzor, whose organisation supports the implementation of child’s rights in the state, told our correspondent during the Camp Child Protection Committee (CCPC) quarterly meeting in the Uikpam IDP Camp in Guma LGA that 11 cases of rape had been recorded since the programme began in January this year, noting that one case had been charged to court.

Chibuzor also said that his organisation was working with stakeholders in the state towards creating awareness on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

He disclosed reported cases of child marriage in the Gbajimba IDP Camp in Guma LGA.
