Poor drainage system and distortion of town planning in Awka, Anambra State, are threatening the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
Our reporter who visited the gully erosion site in the Kwat axis of Awka South discovered that people blocked the Eyi-Agu River with refuse and its waters spilled over and caused havoc to buildings and the expressway.
A resident, Mr Nwaorah Michael, who spoke to City & Crime, said that the poor drainage was a serious threat to people and their property.
He said people were also blocking drains, especially since the government removed dumpsites in the state.

He further said, “You can see that this is a waterway but people have built on it. You know water must find its way, and finding its way, it must destroy buildings and roads. Look at the gully here, it is already eating off the expressway.”
He, therefore, called on the government to urgently intervene to save the ugly situation before it cut off the expressway.
A staff of the Anambra State Drainage Management System said that the government was doing much to clear the drainage, but noted that people wrongly build on waterways and dump refuse in wrong places; even in rivers.
