NYSC stages ‘unity walk’ to mark 50th anniversary

The National Youth Service Corps staged a unity walk in Abuja yesterday to kick start activities lined up for its 50th anniversary.

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Yushau Dogara Ahmed, said the walk was aimed at creating awareness for everyone to know how far the scheme had gone and its achievements so far.

He said: “We are carrying out an advocacy campaign to let people know that we are celebrating NYSC at 50.

“We have made impact in the area of education, health, election, unity. I am sure you know that without corps members, the election wouldn’t have been possible.”

Ahmed scored the performance of corps members at the just concluded 2023 generals very high.

He said there were no negative reports on the conduct of corps members during the elections.

He said the NYSC Trust Fund Bill had reached its final stage awaiting President Muhammadu Buhari’s assent.

He said the bill had successfully gone through all the necessary stages it was billed to pass through, expressing optimism that it would be given be signed very soon.

He said when signed, it would help improve and restructure the affairs of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurial Department (SAED) programme to enable corps members become employers of labour rather than job seekers.
