Senate Presidency: Ranking can’t disqualify me – Umahi

Senator-elect and governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, has also informed President Muhammadu Buhari of his intention to be president of the 10th Senate.

Speaking after meeting Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja yesterday, Umahi said “justice, equity and fairness” must guide the ruling All Progressives Congress when zoning the principal offices of the 10th National Assembly.

The governor, who said the South East made considerable contributions to the victory of the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, advised the party against gauging its choices of candidate by vote contributions alone.

The senator-elect, while reacting to a question on his relative inexperience as a lawmaker, said he had garnered enough experience in the public sector as a two-term governor and private sector as a businessman to lead the 10th Senate.

On the question that he might be disqualified from the race for not being a ranking senator, the governor said the constitution of the country supersedes any other law, citing the previous contest between David Mark and George Akume and the eligibility of Godswill Akpabio to become minority leader in the 8th National Assembly to buttress his argument.
