172 troops deployed to Guinea Bissau on peacekeeping mission

About 172 soldiers have been deployed on a peace support mission in Guinea Bissau.

The troops, who began their pre-deployment training on March 21 at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre (MLAILPKC), Jaji, Kaduna State, have undergone a four-week intensive training and medical screening.

They also displayed their weapon-handling skills in an Inter Platoon Stripping and Assembling Competition at the pre-deployment graduation ceremony yesterday in Kaduna.

Addressing the troops, the Chief of Operations Nigerian Army, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, said the troops would be Nigeria’s Company 2 Stabilisation Mission in the ECOWAS support mission in Guinea Bissau.

Represented by the Director, Peace Support Operations, Major General Bayode Adetoro, he said the graduation further confirmed the commitment of Nigeria to deploy quality peacekeepers as part of its contributions to the quest for global peace and security.

He explained that the pre-deployment training was aimed at refreshing and polishing their knowledge and expertise in peace support operations.

Earlier, the Commandant of the MLAILPKC, Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye, said the training was intense, comprehensive, and conducted using the Standard United Nations Core Pre-Deployment Training Materials.
