Imo Assembly: Group wants certificates issued to APC candidates

A group under the auspices of the Amalgamated Union of Imo State Professionals (AUIMP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue certificates of return to the All Progressives Congress candidates for Ideato South and Ideato North state constituency of Imo State, Okechukwu Udeze and Joshua Duhu respectively.

The group, who led a peaceful protest to INEC’s office in Abuja, alleged that some officials of the commission were working to undermine democracy in the state.

Addressing newsmen on behalf of the protesters, the state organizing secretary of APC in the state, Ikechukwu Sunday Umeh, said they came to complain to the INEC chairman, Prof Mahmud Yakubu, that despite the fact the state assembly elections could not hold in some polling units for Ideato North constituency, PDP candidate was declared winner.

He said election did not hold in 56 of the 196 polling units in Ideato North constituency, wondering why the PDP candidate was declared winner.

He accused two INEC officials of being behind the travails of the two APC candidates for Ideato North and South constituencies, urging INEC to issue certificates of return to the two candidates who were earlier declared winners.

The INEC deputy director in charge of security, Mrs Ndidi Okafor, who addressed the group on behalf of the commission, commended them for conducting themselves in a peaceful and matured manner without rancour.

She assured them that she will channel their complaints to the appropriate authorities for urgent action as soon as work resumes next week after the Easter holiday.
