49 prisons inmates freed in Rivers

Rivers State Chief Judge, Justice Adama Iyayi Lamikanra, has granted pardon to 49 prison inmates of the Port Harcourt Maximum Prisons.

This is part of the activities marking the celebration of Rivers Golden Jubilee.

About 4,000 inmates were at the Port Harcourt Maximum Prisons, and over 3,000 were awaiting trial.

Justice Iyayi-Lamikanra said the exercise was carried out based on the power bestowed on her as contained in and mandated by the Provision of the Criminal Justice (Release from Custody) (Special Provisions) Act Cap 40, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
