Edo communities get electricity after 2 years in darkness

Electricity has been restored in Ibiwe, Obhakhavbaye and other communities in Edo State after two years of blackout.

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) disconnected the communities from the national grid over two years ago due to N10 million unpaid electricity bills.

The communities were reconnected to the national grid after Governor Godwin Obaseki cleared the N10m debt.

Speaking on the development, Chief B.O.B. Edogun, the Edogun of Benin Kingdom, commended the governor for his intervention.

He said, “We had been in darkness for over two years now. Though we had a transformer, it broke down as a result of power overload and we had been repairing it over the years.

“We continued our meeting with BEDC to see how we could work things out, but the governor did us a favour and paid the sum of N10 million debt for us to help restore the electricity and we have been having constant light.”
