10th NASS: Jigawa, Kwara reps join speakership race

The member representing Mallammadori/Kaugama federal constituency of Jigawa State in the House of Representatives, Abubakar Makki Yalleman, has joined the race for the office of Speaker in the 10th Assembly.

Daily Trust on Sunday reports that the 10th House of Representatives is billed for inauguration in June.

The Jigawa lawmaker, while expressing interest for the position, urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the position of the Speaker to the North West, where he hails from, saying it would further enhance fairness and balance of political offices in the country.

Yalleman, who is also the deputy chairman, House Committee on Defence, said although zoning of political offices was not clearly stated in the constitution, it was introduced in line with the principles of federal character.

He was first elected into the House of Representatives in 2019 and won his re-election in the 2023 National Assembly election.

In the same vein, the member representing Ekiti-Isin/ Irepodun/ Oke-ero federal constituency of Kwara State, Abdulraheem Olawuyi (APC-Kwara), has joined the race for the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 10 National Assembly.

He disclosed his intention in a statement yesterday, noting that he would officially declare for the seat in Abuja on April 4.

Rep AbdulRaheem, who is the chairman, House Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, said he had consulted widely on his intention to contest the position and was impressed by the feedback.

The lawmaker, who is a ranking member in the House, won a third term in the 2023 National Assembly election.

He said he believed he had the needed experienced to make the office of the Speaker better if elected.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Ahmed Idris Wase, the chairman, House Committee on Appropriations, Aliyu Muktar Betara and other candidates, have also indicated interest in the position.
