Towards sustaining and empowering retirees

Life after retirement is to some public servants the most dreaded period of their life because of the uncertainty that surrounds it. Even with proper planning by way of contributory pension scheme during one’s active period in service, the uncertainty of both the political and economic policies in the country makes the future of pensioners and the aged very bleak and unpredictable.

Therefore, I wish to urge retirees in Nigeria of the need to take advantage of the opportunities which retirement offers to better their lives and also encouraged them to possess positive mindsets for balanced living.

Retirees should strive to always engage healthy lifestyles for optimal living such that retirement could be a fulfilling period in their life.

These include good food, good sleeping patterns, active lifestyle, regular exercises as well balanced social and family life. Ageing is a process and ageing well is a direct outcome of one’s lifestyle.

Interim government is a joke taken too far

This informed the recently held pre-retirement planning workshop organised for 58 retirees from the FCT’s six area councils and local education authorities.

The essence of the workshop was to train the retirees on measures that would help them navigate through retirement processes without encountering negative trends.

Since retirement is the pinnacle of every worker’s career,  organising such programmes for retirees who have been paid their entitlements has remained the culture of the Pension Board overtime.

As part of efforts towards achieving its statutory mandate, it has also established viable platforms aimed at sustaining various empowerment programmes for retirees to ensure they enjoy quality lives after service.

I also wish to stress that retirees would always receive their benefits as at when due and wish to call on the retirees to explore the immense knowledge the workshop offered to improve their lives while imbibing positive attitudes in order to live well.

Thus, retirees should appreciate the FCT Administration for its commitment to retirees’ welfare as well as the several reforms introduced into the pension system which has enabled FCT to stand out among other states of the federation.
