Kwara doctor accused of killing housewife during operation

A magistrates’ court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, has ordered the remand of Dr Ayodele Joseph for allegedly killing a housewife, Nneka Akanike (39), during an operation for appendicitis.

The complainant and husband of the deceased, Nnamdi Akanike, said he took his wife to Dr Ayodele’s hospital in the Sawmill area after she complained of stomach pain.

In the First Information Report (FIR) noted that: “You tested her and confirmed it was appendicitis, then charged the sum of N80,000. Along the line, you initially said she could be treated through operation or by injection, but later said it had ripped and could only be operated.”

The charge sheet added that: “After you took his wife to the theatre, together with three staff nurses, you refused his plea to allow him see his late wife in the theatre room until one of the nurses came and told him she had died.

“But when the corpse was transported to the village in Anambra State, just six hours later, it was discovered that her nose had been chopped off.”

The police further told the court that investigation showed the accused was a quack medical practitioner.

Prosecutor Zaccheus Folurunsho urged the court to remand the suspect, which was objected to by the defense counsel, Barrister A. A. Jimoh.

The Magistrate, AbdulRaheem Bello, ordered his remand in the federal correctional facility in Ilorin and adjourned the case to April 6, 2023.
