The incident occurred on Tuesday barely 24 hours after the state governorship and House of Assembly elections results were announced.

Uduma, told journalists that the hoodlums, numbering about 30, stormed the court premises singing war songs before setting ablaze the building.

Uduma stressed that the thugs had before Tuesday attempted to burn down the state high court, but were prevented by security agencies.

She explained that valuable property as well as documents belonging to the court were totally burnt.

Also, the Chairman of the council, Mr. Chima Ekuma Nkama, who confirmed the incident, said that the court was burnt beyond repair.

He said, “It is very unfortunate that the hoodlums launched an attack on the High Court at Owutu Edda community.

“When we went there, the whole place was on fire. We have reported the matter, even the governor, the commissioner of police are all aware.

“We are currently doing our best to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended.”

However, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Faleye Olaleye, has warned that any form of celebrations and protests by political party supporters for or against winners of the just concluded elections must not infringe on the right of others.

Olaleye insisted that any candidate dissatisfied with the outcome of the elections should seek redress in the court of law rather than resort to self help.

The Ebonyi incident added to cases of arson in the South East. In December 2022, a magistrates’ court in Owerri and a high court in Orlu LGA of Imo State, were razed by gunmen.
