Fifteen political parties in Akwa Ibom State have signed a peace accord ahead of this Saturday’s governorship and Houses of Assembly elections.
The parties are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), Young Progressives Party (YPP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Accord Party (AP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Action Alliance (AA), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Social Democratic Party (SDP) and others.
The governorship candidates of all the major parties were present at the event while the House of Representatives candidates’ accord was signed by party chairmen.
Speaking before administering the pact at the state’s police command headquarters in Uyo, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Olatoye Durosinmi, urged the candidates to warn their supporters against perpetrating violence or indulging in any form of thuggery, saying the police would not hesitate to fight anyone engaged in such acts.
He said, “See the peace of Akwa Ibom State as paramount and beyond your personal interest. Elections will come and go but the state will remain for us.”
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Cyril Omorogbe, promised a level-playing ground for all the candidates, noting that INEC remained an unbiased umpire in elections.
