1,000-year-old medieval treasure discovered in the Netherlands

According to the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities on Thursday, a Dutch historian discovered a 1,000-year-old Medieval treasure trove that included four golden ear pendants, two strips of gold leaf, and 39 silver coins.

In 2021, Lorenzo Ruijter used a metal detector in the little North Holland town of Hoogwoud to discover the hoard. While specialists at the National Museum of Antiquities cleaned, investigated, and dated the artefacts, the metal detectorist was required to keep it a secret for two years.

Researchers estimate the treasure would have been buried around the year 1250 CE, which is when one of the coins had a date of origin. The jewellery, on the other hand, would have been at least two centuries old by then.

In an interview with Reuter, Rujiter said; “It was very special discovering something this valuable, I can’t really describe it. I never expected to discover anything like this.”
