Why women should be educated – Chinese Ambassador’s wife

The wife of the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Madam Liang Huili, has said the girl-child should be encouraged to go to school in order to drive the development of society.

She gave the advice at a briefing on the development of women’s cause in China on Tuesday in Abuja as part of events to mark the 2023 International Women’s Day.

While noting that the compulsory education introduced in China has empowered many women to contribute to the development of the country, Madam Liang likened the girl-child to a plant in the garden that should be nurtured to maturity through education.

Speaking about China, she said women account for 40 per cent of the labour force, adding that as of 2017, there were 340 million women in the labour force.

“Women’s job options are greatly expanded. In 2010, 46.8% of women worked in the secondary and tertiary sectors, up 24.8 percentage points from 1982,” Madam Liang.

She also said China was giving women equal political rights with men, noting that the number of female officials at CPC and government departments increased from 422,000 in the early 1980s to 1.906 million in 2017, accounting for 26.5% of the total officials.

She said with Nigeria and China having so many similarities, women’s participation from both countries would improve their bilateral cooperation and bring more benefits to the people of the two countries.
