Many Nigerians achieving extraordinary feats in China – Envoy

The Consulate General of Nigeria in Shanghai, China, says many Nigerian nationals are achieving extraordinary feats in a wide range of fields in the Asian country away from the narrative of harassment and discrimination by host communities.

The Consul-General, Chimezie Okeoma Ogu, stated this at a town-hall meeting with Nigerians living in Shanghai, China’s commercial nerve centre.

The meeting was themed ‘Exploring Opportunities for Nigerians in East China: Consular Support.’

Ogu said the meeting was to spotlight Nigerians making exploits in China and highlight opportunities and challenges Nigerian students and businessmen face in the country.

He said hitherto, the impression was that Nigerians living in China suffered harassment, attacks and intimidation while pursuing their businesses legitimately.

Ogu said: “The story is now different as many Nigerians are doing well in various fields including academia, corporate world and businesses.”

On the welfare of Nigerians in Shanghai, the Consul General said the consulate had, on several occasions, supported stranded Nigerians financially, including settling medical bills, consumables and giving stipends to those freed from detention to return to Nigeria.

Ibe Udensi, a textile and logistics expert, charged Nigerians doing business in China to be honest in their dealings while obeying the laws of the land.

Prof Yekini Shehu of Zhejiang Normal University, China, shared his career experience in academic institutions in China and expressed, particularly the fair and accepted promotion procedures in China based on merit.
