The Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to charge its members detained by the commission to court.
A statement by the committee’s spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye, also called on the anti-graft agency to free those granted bail.
He said Nigeria has become a "gestapo state" under the present government, stressing that the nation was drifting into dictatorship and likely to plunge into anarchy if caution was not taken.
"It is also very clear in the Constitution of Nigeria that no security agency has the right or power to detain suspects more than 48 hours without trial.
"Ironically, while former leaders and members of PDP are being arrested indiscriminately and detained without trial, other former office holders of the ruling APC who have been accused of various corrupt practices are yet to be arrested but instead are compensated with juicy ministerial appointments. Double standard!" the statement said.
