The Sokoto State House of Assembly has passed a bill for the right to free and compulsory education to all children aged 6-18 years.
Earlier while presenting recommendations of the Committee on Education, the Chairman Alhaji Aminu Bala explained, “The bill makes provision for right to education for children of six to eighteen. By implication, it means free education up to senior secondary level.”
Bala pointed out that children within the age bracket must attend school and failure to do so would attract sanction.
He also said the bill sought to make provision to institutionalize the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) as one of its major features.
House Leader, Alhaji Garba Bello who moved a motion for its consideration, said the bill would have a great impact on the growth and development of the state.
After the House considered the recommendations of committee, Speaker Alhaji Salihu Maidaji announced the passage of the bill.
