The Senate yesterday rejected an interim report by its ad-hoc committee on farmers and herders clashes in Southern Kaduna and other parts of the country.

The rejection of the report of the committee chaired by Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC, Kano) followed observation by the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and supported by Senator Barnabas Gemade (APC, Benue).

The committee had recommended that the Federal Government should review the country’s Constitution to address settler/indigene dichotomy across the country.

The committee also said Zamfara and Kaduna state governments have spent over N30 billion in addressing the insecurity challenges.

It also observed that 70 per cent of police officers posted to Southern Kaduna, are indigenes of the area, calling on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris to address it.

Kicking against the report, Ekweremadu said the committee’s work was not thorough and that it failed to address the salient issues it was mandated to address.

Senate President Bukola Saraki urged the committee to accommodate all the issues raised and come up with a clean report. He also urged them to be time conscious.
