The statement reads in part, "This unruly behavior is a distraction from allowing the Senate President to concentrate in his lawful duties. We also wish to draw the attention of such attackers to desist from such wrongful assertion, and to also stop attacking his friends and loyalists both in and out of the National Assembly.
"Why do people keep throwing stones in the market place without certainty? A hunted stone is thrown with certainty towards a target.
“They have thrown several stones of uncertainty at Mr. Senate President from the stone of alterations of some senate rules that produced him as the Senate President, later it was false declaration of assets that took him to Code of Conduct Bureau, and now importation of cars without paying duties, as if is not enough, that his aide has mismanaged a Paris Club funds during his days as governor.
"Isn’t this clear that some people are bent on destroying his political reputation? Enough of this Game of smack and blackmail.
"Do you fight corruption simply because you are indifferent about a person? You fight corruption because you have established the fact that a person is guilty of your accusations. We think if such is done, we will be upholding the principles of the rule of law.
"If anyone or group of persons have any reason as to why the Senate President be punished, he or they should also have many genuine reasons why many of our past and present leaders should also be punished for their failure to uphold and protect the integrity of our country despite swearing an oath to that regard.
“Several people without elective powers have done so many wrong against the nation and yet no one is calling for their head, but each time the Senate President name is mentioned it becomes a matter of public discuss.
"We call on all Nigerians to rally round the Senate President to support his unwavering love for our country and democracy."
