Thugs suspected to be loyal to one of the main political parties on Saturday stormed a polling unit and destroyed ballot boxes and papers in Dagiri Area of Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
In what seemed like a coordinated attack, polling unit 021, 022 and 023 located near the popular Wazobia Park in Gwagwalada were touched while the second attack took place in Unit 003.
An eyewitness simply identified as Shehu told Daily Trust that the thugs were armed with machetes and sticks which they used to destroy the ballot papers.
Shehu said the attack took place after a substantial number of persons had voted at the polling units.

“We were in a queue when these people, about five or six of them, rushed into the place with cutlasses and sticks. Many people started running. They immediately started hitting boxes and destroyed the ballot papers and ran away again.
“Before the police and soldiers could arrive, they had all escaped,” he said.
When Daily Trust visited the polling unit, security operatives comprising the military, police and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were seen patrolling the area to forestall a recurrence.
Daily Trust also noticed that voting had resumed as some people were casting their votes.
