dRPC trains Sokoto Hisbah officials on GBV

The development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) on Wednesday trained Hisbah officials on how best to handle cases of gender based violence (GBV) in Sokoto State.

Speaking, the state commander of Hisbah, Muhammad Tambari Usman, noted that the training was aimed at educating the participants on the rights of women and children in their society.

“There is a misconception about the rights of women in our society, and because of this, some women are being subjected to all forms of abuse.

“By the time they stepped it down and their colleagues also took the messages to their various places, cases of gender based violence could be minimised,” he said.

Presenting a paper on ‘Understanding the Extant Laws on Protection of Women and Girls from Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Nigeria’, the state’s Director, Public Prosecution, Aishat Ahmad Kaoje, said Hisbah was responsible for commanding good and eradicating evil, including enforcement of Allah’s rights and the rights of individuals.

She added that the organisation had the power to enlighten the public on Sharia Law and its application as well as monitor the proper implementation of the laws.
