55 households in Katsina to benefit from latrine loan scheme

About 55 households have been selected from 11 wards of Bakori Local Government Area in Katsina State for the pilot test of the DFID, UNICEF and Micro Finance Institute’s loans for construction of household latrines.

Daily Trust reports that the council was selected as a scale up exercise having been certified open defecation free by the development partners.

The Executive Secretary of the state Rural Water Supply and Sanitation, Aminu Dayyabu, told newsmen that the idea was to sustain the free open defecation status being enjoyed at the community.

He said the new initiative, under the Sanitation, Hygiene and Water in Nigeria (SHAWN) programme, was designed to improve upon achievement recorded adding that each household was to receive N40,000 to construct the latrine.

In addition, under the programme, toilet business owners are empowered to provide the needed support for the actualisation of the new initiative to achieve improved sanitation and hygiene of the people.
