Over $4.3tr fake products distributed globally in 2021 – DG SON

The Director General of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Mallam Farouk Salim, on Thursday said an estimated $4.3 trillion worth of fake and substandard produces were distributed globally in 2021.

The director general stated this at the 50th anniversary celebration of the body in Lagos, while also restating its commitment to rid the nation’s marketplace of substandard and fake products.

The SON boss noted that the overwhelming figure points to the need for a robust collaboration between SON and industries to fight the scourge.

Towards this end, he called on captains of industry to invest more in brand protection to safeguard their intellectual property and products against counterfeiters, copyright pirates and producers of substandard products.

The DG also assured stakeholders that SON would increase its level of campaigns and engagement with the public to fish out and prosecute peddlers of substandard goods in the nation.

He disclosed that the global substandard and falsified products industry in 2021 was estimated at $4.3 trillion, noting that the overwhelming figure points to the need for a robust collaboration between SON and industries to fight the scourge.
