5 killed, palace, houses burnt in Benue community

At least five people have been reportedly killed after armed invaders attacked Nagi community in Mbachohon Council Ward of Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.
Villagers said seven others were also wounded during the attack which happened at 5pm on Thursday.
The villagers said the attackers earlier attempted to open fire on Naka town, the headquarters of the Gwer West LGA but were repelled by security forces.
They said the gunmen fled and later raided the Nagi community where the five victims – two women and three men – were killed, while more than 50 houses including the  palace of the traditional ruler of the community were set ablaze.
Special Adviser to Benue State Governor, Lt. Col. Paul Hemba, on Friday confirmed the incident to newsmen in Makurdi, alleging that, “They (the attackers) came as usual, it was an unprovoked attack on the community.
“However, the damage would have been more than that but for the timely intervention of the military who chased them away before they could cause more havoc.
“Five persons died. Security has been beefed up and the military has sent in reinforcements and they have actually succeeded in stabilising the situation in the area. So everything is calm now.”
