The Minister of Transportation, Alh. Muazu Jaiji Sambo has charged the staff of the Ministry of Transportation to shun corruption and expose corrupt practices in the ministry.

The Minister stated this in Abuja on Tuesday a 2-day sensitisation/enlightenment workshop organized by the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) in conjunction with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

The theme of the seminar was “diminishing corruption and institutionalizing integrity and good governance in the Federal Ministry of Transportation.”

The Minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani said the “workshop is organized to expose the ugly effect of corruption and corrupt practices in the public and private sector and to seek ways to reduce its occurrence, if not eliminate totally. By so doing, encourage both private and public institutions to institutionalize good governance.”

According to him, “corruption is the misuse of resources or power for private gain. Or the abuse of trusted power for private gain and it is merciless national development killer.”

He said the fight against corruption “deserves concerns and concentrated efforts through enthroning integrity and good governance in public places to bring the minister under strict control.”

“I have no doubt in the ability of the resource persons from the antigraft agencies to prick the moral conscience of the participants on the scourge of corruption raving the socio-economic development of our country. Also outlining the singular and collective actions needed to be taken to reduce the incidences of corruption and corrupt practices to the barest minimum” he said.

In her own remarks, the Permeant Secretary, Dr. Ajani said the totality of what corruption has done to Nigeria is unenviable as it is evident in all corners of the country.

She noted that the public sector has a lot to do in order to change the narrative, especially the public perception of the sector.

She said the sensitization efforts are one of the strategies aimed at sanitizing the public sector and ensuring that Nigerians live in a corrupt-free society.
