Extra-judicial killings: Leaders must take police reform seriously – NHRC boss

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria, Anthony Okechukwu Ojukwu, says political leaders must take the issue of police reforms seriously to address extra-judicial killings in the country.

Ojukwu stated this while commenting on the recent killing of a Lagos female lawyer, Bolanle Raheem, during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

Raheem, her sister, husband and four children were returning from an eatery in the Ajah area of Lagos when the incident happened on Christmas Day.

The force has since detained the erring Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) along with four others for their alleged involvement in the shooting incident that led to the death of the female lawyer.

Commenting on the matter, Ojukwu said, “We should not lose hope. The political leaders must take this issue of police reforms seriously. We need to deal with it holistically for law enforcement to improve in this country.”

He added that every officer found guilty of extra-judicial killing in the country should be held accountable.
