Buni asks police to release teenager who criticised him

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has directed the immediate release of a teenager, Umar M. Garba Nguru, detained by the police for allegedly insulting him.

Daily Trust learnt that the police arrested him on December 11 and detained him over a picture of the governor and a dog he posted, saying he preferred the dog to him.

The detention of the teenager sparked concern and criticism from human rights activists and social media influencers in the state.

Speaking to newsmen in Damaturu, Mr Garba Isa, the father of the victim, said he had no doubt that his son committed the offence but appealed to the governor to forgive him.

Buni, in a statement issued Tuesday by his Director General of Press and Media Affairs, Mamman Mohammed, said he was not aware of the arrest and detention.

“This is the price of leadership and we are fully conscious of it, therefore, l couldn’t have ordered nor condoned the detention of anyone.

“Until someone drew my attention to it, l wasn’t aware of his arrest and detention. I have now directed his immediate release from detention.”

The statement added, ‘‘Social media users are also reminded to be responsive and responsible to respect the rights of everyone, political party, religious and socio-cultural differences, especially as the political campaigns are ongoing.’’
