Fuel Scarcity: Operators alert travellers on impending flight disruptions

There seems to be no end in sight regarding the shortage of aviation fuel rocking the airline industry as operators on Monday alerted air travellers of impending disruption in scheduled flights over the Jet A1 crisis.

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) in a statement said the scarcity of aviation fuel has reared its ugly head again in the past few days.

Apart from the scarcity, some flights were also disrupted as a result of the weather in some parts of the country. It was gathered that some Northern and Southern states were affected including Ilorin, Asaba, among others.

“Please, anticipate delays on our service today as the weather in some of our destinations is below operating minimum. Weather is beyond our control but we regret the inconveniences caused by these delays and appeal for your understanding. We are working hard to reduce the impact of the delays and ensure safe connectivity,” Air Peace said in an update on its social media pages.

Daily Trust reports that the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had predicted hazy weather in some parts of the country.

On the fuel scarcity, the spokesman of AON, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo said the scarcity “will no doubt force airlines to reschedule flights leading to late operations and, or, cancellations.”

He said, “This unintended development is a pain on airline operators and a stain on the industry, especially at this time of mass movement of people for the Christmas and New Year festivities.

“While we are doing our utmost best to manage the situation and ensure safe flight operations, we plead for the understanding of the travelling public in the circumstance.”

The AON called on the concerned authorities including product importers and marketers to do their best to resolve this ugly situation so as to ease the stress it brings on the travelling public.

“As Airline Operators, we remain committed to doing all that is necessary to ensure seamless services and safe air travels in our dear country,” the AON said.
