Obaship tussle: Family mourns slain prince, seeks justice

The family of a middle-aged man, Prince Lukman Olatunji, who was shot dead by a policeman in Ikirun, Osun State over an obaship tussle, has called on the state government to investigate the incident and ensure justice for the family.

The family appealed to the newly sworn-in governor, Ademola Adeleke, to ensure fairness in the selection process of a new oba for the town.

Addressing a press conference at the family house in Ikirun, the head of the family, Olawale Olatunji, said the reversal of the appointment of the new oba by Governor Adeleke was in order.

“We are sad about the death of our son. We are united in Gboleru Ruling House. It’s our turn to produce the next Akinrun. We want the best for Ikirun,” Olatunji said.

He said it was the turn of Gboleru Ruling House to produce the new oba in line with the rotation procedure among the three ruling houses in the town, and that Gboleru unanimously nominated Prince Tajudeen Adesegun Gboleru for the throne.

He expressed disappointment that the past administration of ex-governor Adegboyega Oyetola announced the appointment of another person from Obaara family as the new oba.

Olatunji said Oyetola’s imposition of an oba on the town caused unrest in Ikirun which led to the killing of Lukman on November 23, adding that he was shot dead by a policeman during the crisis.

The head of Gboleru ruling family and elders and Princes from the Gboleru Ruling House, Adegboyega Olatunji and Mudasiru Olatunji, called on the state government to arrest and prosecute the policeman that killed Lukman.
