Govt harps on waste recycling

The Kano State Government has enjoined the state’s indigenous companies and manufacturers to invest heavily in the waste value chain to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on climate change.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, stated this at the opening of a two-day capacity-building workshop on waste sector operators in Kano State.

The commissioner pointed out that the workshop is timely because of the devastating consequences of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.

He expressed optimism that “this initiative or workshops is no doubt going to address the challenges posed by indiscriminate waste disposal and the resultant consequences in order to ensure environmental resilience for human and economic development.”

Meanwhile, the commissioner has extolled the Federal Ministry of Environment, the European Union, the Nigeria Climate Change Response Programme (NCCRP) for bringing the program to Kano, which he said is in tandem with the Kano State policy on the environment under the leadership of the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
