The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has distributed breast cancer self-test kits to 100 women in Yobe for early detection of cancer.
The chairperson of NAWOJ, Mrs Fatima Faga, who spoke at the distribution of the cancer test kits to commemorate the International Women’s Day in Damaturu, said the gesture was aimed at checking the spread of the disease.
“We feel it’s very important we imbibe early detection strategies using self breast examination. That is why we selected the 100 women across the 17 local government areas in the state for a test,” she said.
Dr. Bukar Mshellia, who presented a lecture at the event, said with early detection, many deaths arising from cancer would be avoided.
Expressing the regret that the state had no health establishment like Magnetic Resonance Machine for detecting cancer, Msheila said, “I think the only one we had in Yobe was in FMC Nguru and I doubt if it’s working.”
