Rainstorm in parts of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital has destroyed buildings, medical and electricity infrastructures of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) leading to partial disruption of medical services.
The rain which fell heavily Tuesday night lasted several hours, causing havoc and leaving many people in disarray.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UUTH, Prof. Etete Peters who conducted newsmen on assessment tour, indicated the affected places which included the pediatric ward, medical ward, mortuary, incinerator building, school of health information management and the 200 meters perimeter fence which collapsed.
Also affected were the House Officers’ quarters, laundry block, hospital chapel, radiography block and the medical students’ lecture room.
Prof. Peters said the electricity infrastructure which was damaged during the rainstorm mainly led to disruption of medical services and expressed the regret that the damage came when “we were battling to complete some ongoing building facilities.”
