You still have more to do for Nigerians, El-Rufa’i tells NASS

Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufa’I has stated that, despite the milestone they achieved in passing important legislation, the 9th National Assembly members have more to do for Nigerians within the period of time left for them.

He made the call while speaking as the chairman at the Distinguished Parliamentarians Lecture 2022 that was held in Abuja on Monday.

According to him, the parliament should look at some critical areas which have been before them in order to give the country advanced legislations that will meet the yearnings of Nigerians.

El-Rufa’I said the Assembly should look at the areas before they round off their time in office.

According to him, one of the areas is the creation of state/community police saying that Nigeria needs a decentralised police system that will work with the peculiarities and needs of the people.

He added that the issue of Value Adde Tax (VAT) which he said, was a major survival mechanism must be resolved because the dispute around it is not good for fiscal health.

El-Rufa’I added that the country must also re-balance its control of natural resources in order to give states more control over their resources to ensure fiscal restructuring and more financial independence.

The Kaduna State governor called for making the first 12 years of education free, compulsory and a first-line charge on states and the federal budget.

More so, he said there must also be a robust judicial reform that will ensure its full independence from interference from any quarters.

He further reiterated the need for local government reforms to make them stronger to work for the people.
