Forum meets to strengthen migration governance

The Civil Society Forum on Migration and Development (CSONetMADE) on Wednesday held a discourse to fashion out best ways to strengthen migration governance in Nigeria.

The event, which had in attendance stakeholders in the migration governance architecture, was the second edition, with the maiden edition held in 2021.

Addressing the participants, the National Coordinator of the CSONetMADE, Dr. Emeka Xris Obiezu, appreciated the federal government for recognising CSOs as critical partners in migration governance.

He said the discourse would allow the participants to evaluate and criticise their roles in migration governance free of external influence.

Obiezu, who disclosed that the forum’s 10-point communique issued in 2021 was being incorporated in the national policy on migration governance, expressed optimism that the outcome of this year’s event would be adopted not only by the federal government but other stakeholders championing migrants’ rights.

Hajiya Sadiya Umar Faruq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, said the federal government was taking the issue of migration seriously because of the continued increase in the world population and the crises in some parts of the world.

The minister, who was represented by a Deputy Director in the ministry, Charles Anaelo, commended the contributions of CSOs to migration governance and assured that their inputs as contained in the communique to be issued at the end of the deliberations would be part of the national policy on migration.

The Civil Society Forum was organised by CSONetMADE.
